Water Charges in Ireland
Water charges are no longer payable in respect of residential property in Ireland. This long mooted new tax was proposed to financially support the new Irish government body Irish Water. Following a widespread campaign the Government relented on the imposition of the charge.
The Government had by this time proceeded to install meters to residential areas to monitor water usage. Charges have not however been introduced following the popular campaign in 2014.
Water Charges are deemed by law to be a “utility” on the property. In the current legal framework this has no bearing on the sale or purchase of residential property. A Purchaser of a property doe snot have to investigate the matter of water charges payment history or whether the property is registered with Irish Water.
All properties must be registered with Irish Water and where charges do not apply the property must additionally register the source of its water supply. Further information is available at this Irish Water page.
